The Pennsylvania State Archives holds the regimental records of the over 215 regiments raised by the Commonwealth during the Civil War. Of these, the Muster Out Rolls are the most requested and most used records by the public. The State Archives needs funding to save 900 of the most severely deteriorated muster rolls. Each roll, one per company, is approximately 31 inches wide by 40 inches high and reveal names, ages, and what happened to each soldier and their company and regiment during the war. Most of this information is not available anywhere else. The muster rolls are torn, broken, and dirty from overuse. When these stories are gone, they are but a faded memory lost to time and lack of funds to preserve them.
Here's how you can help. The Pennsylvania State Archives is accepting donations to help us save these stories. Whether you're a Civil War enthusiast, a re-enactor, a history buff, or someone who can't bear to see this history continue to fade away, you can make a difference with your donation. With funding, they will be cleaned, repaired, and preserved for future generations.
We have two battle plans to help you save these stories.
